September 26, Thursday

This extra night in Prague is for those who wish to ride the bus from Prague to Krakow. Cost of hotel tonight is extra, as is the cost of your dinner tonight and lunch tomorrow. You will arrive in Prague sometime during the day. After you arrive at the hotel, you will check-in and relax. You may need to exchange money. Later we will send you a directions how to do it. You will need some Czech money for the dinner and next day lunch, as well as for when we are back in Prague at the end of the tour. We will meet in the hotel lobby at 6:00 pm for tour registration. Then we will walk to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

This day is primarily for travel, a long drive from Prague to Krakow. Because of the distance we don't have time for too many interesting stops on the way. Anyway, we will have one - the blast furnace in Dolní Vítkovice, built up during the communist era. This is an unusual site that was a highlight for many on the 2018 tour. For lunch we stay together, but you order and pay by yourself. Then we have less then 3 hours to Krakow. After arrival you will check-in and relax. Dinner will be in the hotel, so we will not need to walk somewhere. For people who travel directly to Krakow on their own, we will have registration after the dinner. Please let us know your travel plans so we can confirm the Krakow hotel reservation for you.

Officially our first full day. In the morning you will have time to exchange money (we will give you directions) and then we will discover the city of Krakow. With local guide we will walk through the most important places in the center and will end up at the castle. Then will have lunch by yourself. After lunch you will have free time to focus on your personal wishes. Krakow has a well-preserved historic center that dates back to the 10th century, and there is much to see within walking distance. Later in the afternoon we will meet again and go to dinner. In the evening we will meet with a Polish folk dance group. They will show us some traditional Polish dances and will teach us some simple dances as well.

In the morning we will visit the Oskar Schindler's factory. Here you will learn amazing story of his life and also about the Jewish situation during WW II. Then we will walk together through the old Jewish quarter (Kazimierz) for lunch. Afternoon you can spend more time in Jewish town or visit the very nice Ethnographic museum. Dinner will be on your own.

This will be a busy day for us, leaving Krakow in the morning and heading southeast. Our first stop will be Salt Mine. Yes, there is a better-known mine in Wieliczka, but because that place is really packed by tourists, we will visit a similar place where you will have a more enjoyable experience. Generally, we will go in and out of the mine by lift. There will be also many steps between. They offer part of this tour for people who can't walk steps up and down. After the mine we will move to the city center for a lunch time. We'll be at the square so you will have several possibilities to eat. In the afternoon we will cross border to Slovakia and will arrive in a small village with very nice traditional museum and also, we will have a chance to participate in a local traditional wedding ceremony. During dinner we will meet local folk dancers. After dinner we will go directly to the hotel and will check-in.

Our first stop today will be at Spiš castle, a UNESCO heritage site. Beside the historical ruins you will also admire the great views from the top. Lunch time we will spend in Levoča - also listed as UNESCO heritage. This very nice historical town features the original ramparts. Here you should also exchange money from Polish to EUR. Before we move on, we will visit local Gothic church with unique wooden altar. The following program is arranged for hikers, a trail in Slovakian Paradise. Yes, we have to walk up and down on the path, but the landscape is very pretty here and you will love the views. Those who want to skip the hike will have an option to stay in Levoča and we will come back to pick them up. Here and here you can see how parts of the path looks like. Dinner will be together in our hotel.

October 2, Wednesday

From the hotel we will go to see the Tatra Mountains, taking a cable car up and hiking down from the top. For those who want to minimize up and down hiking, there are two other options: ride the cable car both ways (you'll have to pay a small amount for the trip down), or walk around the beautiful lake near the lunchtime restaurant. Here and here you can see how parts of the path looks like. Lunch will be in very nice restaurant by the lake; afterwards, we will take a local railway for about 45 minutes by train. Then we will meet with bus and go to Poprad. After two days with a hiking program you may appreciate this option to visit local swimming pool. The other option will the city center. Refreshed, we'll be ready to meet with another folk dance group. These dancers are regular people from the village, not a performing group. But spending time together will be very pleasant. For dinner we will stop in local restaurant.

In the morning we need to load the bus and will depart for Moravia. We have many miles to drive, but we have several interesting stop on the list. Our first stop will be meeting with a traditional musical instrument producer. Name of the instrument is Fujara and it is very typical shepherd's flute. Our next stop will be Liptovský Mikuláš. Here we will visit local synagogue and will have free time at the square to eat lunch. In the afternoon we will use the cable car again. We don't want to miss this chance, going up by cable car and walk down a bit over the edge. We have some photos from this walk and you can see it here: beginning, middle part, going down 01 and going down 02. Relax above the village :-). On other side we will find completely unique village Vlkolínec (UNESCO) which looks like an open-air museum, but still is a living village. The bus will wait for us below the village and then you will have a change to rest; we have a long drive to reach Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, where we will check-in to our hotel.

We will depart a little earlier today have time to exchange money again - to Czech Crowns. Then we will visit famous Little Wooden Town - the open-air museum. Our next stop will be a local glassworks. We will not see glass blowing—it is done in different part of the country—but we will see decorating glass by acid etching. If you are interested, you will be able to buy some glass here for very reasonable prices. (Bring some bubble wrap in your luggage!) Lunch will be together in one of the mountain restaurants and then we will visit a very nice outdoor gallery of wooden sculptures. Afterwards you will have unique chance to visit private house and meet a lady who produces traditional Easter Eggs. You may be able to try one of the decorative techniques yourself. For dinner you will be on your own in the city center of Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. That evening we will meet with a local folk dance group at our hotel.

After loading the bus we will go to nearby town of Valašské Meziříčí to visit local tapestry workshop. Lunch time we will spend in historical town of Olomouc with unique Plague Column listed as UNESCO heritage. Our next stop will be a private Carriage Museum and meeting with local craftsman. For dinner we will stop in Svitavy and local musician will come to join us with his accordion. We will practice a few songs on the way so we should be able to sing several songs together. After arrival in Litomyšl we will check-in and relax.

We will have a relaxed start this morning. First we will walk around the historical city center and end up at the chateau. We will have a tour and see beautiful interiors. This chateau is listed as UNESCO heritage. After the tour you will be on your own until early afternoon, when we will go to small town Proseč to visit very special museum of pipes. We will have mostly non-smoking people in the group, I guess, but this museum will be interesting for all of us. After this short visit we have another chance for hikers. The trip will take us into a sandstone labyrinth. Fist part is little difficult, the rest is nice and flat. These who will not want to join us for this small adventure, can stay in the town. The bus will park here as well. Dinner will be together with the group.

Today we have relaxing program. In the morning we will depart from Litomyšl and our first stop will be in Chrudim for their puppet museum. Then you will have free time and lunch time in the city center. For the afternoon we have Kutná Hora on schedule. It is very very nice medieval town with famous Cathedral. We will see the cathedral first and then will walk through the town. Finally we will reach Prague, check-in and walk for dinner.

This is last full day of our tour. We will let you enjoy the city. If you prefer to travel with a group, we will offer a walk to Petřín hill and the Prague castle area. Lunch will be on your own and we will meet again early in the evening for dinner. Then we will have a country dance evening with Czech dancers. David will call dances.
